CMO’s ability to regulate or calm down hyper-immune responses is one of the most exciting qualities and shows that CMO may be helpful in addressing the symptoms related to many autoimmune diseases, such as those in rheumatoid arthritis. And finally, CMO functions as an analgesic or painkiller.

The first double blind study was conducted in 1997 under the auspices of the Joint European Hospital Studies Program. Of the 106 people who received cetyl myristoleate, 63% showed improvement vs just 15% for the 226 people in the placebo group.

In August of 2002, a double blind study was published in the Journal or Rheumatology. The study included sixty-four patients with chronic knee osteoarthritis (OA). Half of the patients received a cetyl myristoleate complex and half a placebo. The conclusion was that the CMO group saw significant improvement, while the placebo group saw little to none. In fact in their conclusion they state that CMO “may be an alternative to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of OA”. In another study of 1814 arthritis patients, results showed that over 87% of the subjects had greater than 50% recovery and over 65% of those showed from 75% – 100% recovery following a sixteen day regimen of CMO.

Boswellia,

also known as Shallaki or Boswellia serrata, is a natural and safe herb for optimum joint health. Derived from the resin of plants, Boswellia or Indian frankincense is an ayurvedic herb that is used traditionally to treat arthritis, ulcerative colitis, coughs, sores, snakebite, and asthma. The major components are boswellic acid and alpha-boswellic acid. Studies show that boswellic acid has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects. Boswellic acid seems to be free of the adverse effects commonly found in steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Boswellia has been used extensively for joint support and to provide an overall sense of wellbeing. Also known as “Salai Guggul,” it is like its cousin, Guggul, in offering broad health and immuno-modulating benefits. The gum resin is used as an ointment for sores and has anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerotic, and anti-arthritic activities. The nonphenolic fraction of the gum resin had marked sedative and analgesic action. This gum is a well-known household fumigant and is used as an anti-inflammatory agent when applied externally. Internally, besides being anti-arthritic, it has expectorant effects and can reduce body weight. In clinical trials, promising results were observed for patients suffering with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic colitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, bronchial asthma, and peritumoral brains edemas.

Devil’s Claw,

(Harpagophytum procumbens) is a South African plant which has been used as an analgesic, sedative, anti-inflammatory and diuretic worldwide.

Africans have used the herb for centuries to treat skin cancer, fever, malaria and indigestion. In Europe, Devil’s Claw tea is recommended for arthritis, diabetes, allergies, senility and is widely utilized as an appetite stimulant and a digestive aid.

In the west, Devil’s claw has been recommended for treating a wide variety of conditions including diseases of the liver, kidneys, and bladder, allergies, arteriosclerosis, lumbago, gastrointestinal disturbances, menstrual difficulties, neuralgia, headache, menopause, heartburn, nicotine poisoning, and above all, rheumatism and arthritis. The main active ingredients in Devil’s claw are Harpogoside and Beta sitosterol, which possess anti-inflammatory properties and create support for joint, ligament and tendon problems. Devil’s claw is reported to help with joint pain while improving vitality in the joint.

Turmeric Extract (Curcuma Longa),

Eases pains of all types of arthritis and possesses strong anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. For thousands of years, turmeric has been used in homeopathic medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to reduce muscle spasms, bruises and muscular pains. It is a powerful antioxidant, possessing the same anti-inflammatory properties as cortisone and ibuprofen, without the side-effects associated with their use. The active ingredient of Turmeric is known as curcumin. It has been shown to have a wide range of therapeutic effects, including protection against free radical damage due to its role as a strong antioxidant. It reduces inflammation by reducing histamine levels and possibly by increasing production of natural cortisone by the adrenal glands. It protects the liver from a number of toxic compounds and has been shown to reduce platelets from clumping together, which in turn, improves circulation and helps protect against atherosclerosis. Turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties may be due to leukotriene inhibition.

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM),

is a naturally occurring, organic sulfur-containing compound possessing anti-inflammatory properties, preventing destruction of cartilage and reducing inflammation in joints. Studies have shown joints affected by osteoarthritis have lower sulfur content and that sulfur from oral supplements of MSM is incorporated into the body with subsequent lower levels of joint deterioration.

Lipase,

are enzymes necessary to fully absorb and digest all the nutrients of ASTRUM in the intestines. This digestive enzyme is responsible for breaking down lipids (fats), in particular triglycerides, which are fatty substances in the body that come from fat in the diet. Once broken down into smaller components, triglycerides are more easily absorbed in the intestines.

Glucosamine,

made from the shells of shellfish and refined corn, stimulates cartilage cells and synthesizes glucosaminoglycans and proteoglycans – chemicals that help to repair and rebuild worn–out joints. It aids in maintaining the flexibility of cartilage to flex and absorb physical shock while at the same time suppressing destructive chondrocytes from breaking down cartilage. As you age, the amount of glucosamine created by the body decreases. This causes cartilage and bones to scrape against each other. Joints become damaged, and the lubricating synovial fluid in joint spaces becomes thin and watery. Glucosamine’s function in maintaining integrity of joints, inhibiting cartilage destroying enzymes, repairing and rebuilding worn joints and cartilage and increasing joint flexibility make it an indispensable part in any treatment of arthritis.

Cautions:

Children, women who are pregnant, and women who could become pregnant should not take these supplements. They have not been studied long enough to determine their effects on a child or on a developing fetus.

Because glucosamine is an amino sugar, people with diabetes should check their blood sugar levels more frequently when taking this supplement.

If you are allergic to shellfish, consult your doctor before deciding to take glucosamine. In most cases, however, allergies are caused by proteins in shellfish, not chitin, a carbohydrate from which glucosamine is extracted.
